Liquidambar Bonsai Tree

Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly called the American sweetgum, is a deciduous tree in the genus Liquidambar native to warm temperate areas of eastern North America and tropical montane regions of Mexico and Central America. A popular ornamental tree in temperate climates, it is recognizable by the combination of its five-pointed star-shaped leaves and its hard, spiked fruits .

Liquidambar Bonsai trees in the UK are classed as deciduous outdoor trees. Liquidambar Bonsai trees should be kept outside in the summer months. Give the tree a full sun or mostly sunny location. The trees should not be exposed to frost or extremely high temperatures.

Keep the Liquidambar Bonsai well watered throughout the growing season. The soil should be kept moist at all other times. Use rainwater if possible and the tree will also benefit from a regular water mist spray.

Repot as and when required in early spring. Use a good well draining compost mix.

Heavy pruning should be done in early spring. Wounds are slow to heal so you should use a plant sealant to protect the Bonsai tree from pests.

Feed the bonsai with a weak general flowering plant feed every two weeks or use a slow release feed in the compost. Try not to over feed Liquidambar.
