Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) Bonsai Tree

Chamaecyparis obtusa (Japanese cypress, hinoki cypress or hinoki  is a species of cypress native to central Japan. It is a slow-growing tree which grows to 35 m tall with a trunk up to 1 m in diameter. The bark is dark red-brown. The leaves are scale-like, 2-4 mm long, blunt tipped (obtuse), green above, and green below with a white band at the base of each scale-leaf. The cones are globule, 8-12 mm diameter, with 8-12 scales arranged in opposite pairs.

Hinoki Cypress Bonsai are a slow growing outdoor evergreen tree. Bonsai styles include formal and informal single uprights, slanting and group plantings.

Position the Hinoki Cypress Bonsai in full sun or a well lit area. Cedar are hardy but as a Bonsai you should protect the trees from extreme cold temperatures and winds.

Due to the slow growing nature of Hinoki Cypress Bonsai, you should be able to repot the tree less frequently than other Bonsai. Use a good, well draining compost, preferably designed for acidic loving plants.

Keep the soil moist at all times but never waterlogged. 

Heavy pruning should take place in early spring or late autumn. Pinching or light pruning during the summer months. Hinoki Cypress Bonsai response well to wiring.

Feed every three weeks during the growing season with a general plant feed or add a slow release to the compost.
