Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis) Bonsai Tree

Juniperus chinensis is a shrub or tree, very variable in shape, reaching 1-20m tall. It is native to northeast Asia, in China, Mongolia, Japan, Korea and the southeast of Russia. It is a popular ornamental tree or shrub in gardens and parks, with over 100 named cultivars selected for various characters, such as yellow foliage (e.g. cvs. 'Aurea', 'Tremonia'), permanently juvenile foliage (e.g. cv. 'Shoosmith'), columnar crown shape (cv. 'Columnaris'), abundant cones (e.g. cv. 'Kaizuka'), etc. The cultivar 'Shimpaku' is a very important bonsai subject.

Chinese Juniper are a outdoor evergreen tree. Bonsai styles include formal and informal single uprights, cascade, slanting and group plantings. Garden centres are a good source of growing material.

Position the Chinese Juniper Bonsai in full sun. Chinese Juniper are hardy but as a Bonsai you should protect the trees from extreme cold temperatures and winds.

Due to the slow growing nature of Chinese Juniper, you should be able to repot the tree less frequently than other Bonsai. Use a good, well draining compost, preferably designed for slightly acidic loving plants.

Keep the soil moist at all times but never waterlogged. 

Heavy pruning should take place in early spring or late autumn. Pinching or light pruning during the summer months. Chinese Juniper Bonsai response well to wiring.

Feed every three weeks during the growing season with a general plant feed or add a slow release to the compost.
