Cotoneaster Bonsai Tree


The Cotoneaster is a very popular bonsai due to the fact that it is so hardy and easy to care for, plus, of course, it looks great. This genus consists of more than 200 different plants and includes deciduous, semi-evergreen and ever-green shrubs. The best varieties for bonsai growers are C. horizontalis, C. Microphyllus. and C. Compacta Nana plus others

Cotoneaster is a versatile outdoor bonsai tree and can be styled in many shapes. It makes a good solo or group specimen.

The Cotoneaster prefers full sun or partial shade. In the height of summer you should protect the bonsai from drying out and position in semi-shaded area if required. Give the Cotoneaster Bonsai good over winter protection from frost.

Cotoneaster bonsai require a lot of water in summer. You should never let this bonsai dry out. Feed the bonsai every two weeks during the growing season with a general purpose fertiliser.

Cotoneaster bonsai tolerates most soil types. Repot young trees every one or two years. Remove between 20% to 30% of the root mass.

Cotoneaster has a delicate bark so be careful if you choose to wire your bonsai. Check the wire regularly so that it does not bite into tree. False Cypress does respond well to pruning and can easily be shaped in many forms.
