Bamboo As Bonsai

Bamboo are a group of woody perennial grasses and part of the true grass family Poaceae, which is a large family with over 10,000 species. Bambuseae also known as Bamboo covers around 91 genera and over 1,000 species. The size of bamboo varies from small annuals to giant timber bamboo. Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant in the world. It can grow up to 3–4 feet/day (1.5-2.0 inches/hr).

Bamboo makes a good outdoor and indoor evergreen Bonsai, depending on the species.

Bamboo like a sheltered full sun position. Keep indoor species away from temperature extremes.

Bamboo Bonsai are water lovers. Make sure that the Bonsai soil is kept damp at all times. Water in the mornings and nights during the summer months. Try to use rain water if available. Use a fine spray to water mist the bamboo.

Young bamboo Bonsai are best styled as a clump. Twin or single trunk styles suit older bamboos.

Bamboo Bonsai can be pruned back quite hard. Pruning can take place all year if the Bonsai is actively growing.

Repot the bamboo as and when required. Keep a check of the root mass and repot when the Bonsai becomes root bound in the pot. Bamboo Bonsai require no special soil type. You can use a general Bonsai mix compost. The bamboo Bonsai will benefit from adding some water retention media to the soil.

Use a feed that is high in nitrogen. Feed every two weeks during the main growing season. Feed indoor bamboo Bonsai monthly during winter.
