Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) Bonsai Tree

Taxodium distichum (Bald-cypress, Baldcypress, Bald Cypress, or Swamp Cypress) is a species of conifer native to the southeastern United States. It is a large tree, reaching 25–40m tall and a trunk diameter of 2–3m. The bark is gray-brown to red-brown, shallowly vertically fissured, with a stringy texture. Unlike most other species in the family Cupressaceae, it is deciduous, losing the leaves in the winter months, hence the name 'bald'.

Bald Cypress are fast growing outdoor Bonsai trees in sunny climates. Cooler UK summers tend to slow down the trees growth. The tree prefers an all year round full sun position.

Repotting should be done in spring. Use a soil with good water retention properties.

The Bald Cypress is a thirsty plant. Keep the soil wet at all times during the growing period.

Heavy pruning can be done in early spring. Pinch back new growth to keep the Bonsai tree's shape. If using wire to shape the Bonsai, you should be careful that the wire does not damage or grow into the bark.

Feed the Bald Cyprus with a slow release soil fertiliser or a soluble general feed every two weeks during the growing season.
