Alder (Alnus) Bonsai Tree

The Common Alder is a deciduous tree native throughout the British Isles and much of Europe. Alder belongs to birch family and comprises of around 30 species. Alder trees are often found in wetland areas.

The Alder is a versatile outdoor bonsai tree and can be styled in many shapes. It makes a good solo or group specimen.

The Alder tree prefers full sun or partial shade. In the height of summer you should protect the bonsai from drying out and position in semi-shaded area if required.

Alder bonsai require a lot of water. You should never let this bonsai dry out. Feed the bonsai every two weeks during the growing season with a general purpose fertiliser.

Alder bonsai like a clay based soil. Repot young trees every one or two years. Remove between 20% to 30% of the root mass.

Alder has a delicate bark so be careful if you choose to wire your bonsai. Check the wire regularly so that it does not bite into tree. Alder does respond well to pruning and can easily be shaped in many forms.
