Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) Bonsai Tree

Acer palmatum, called Japanese Maple or Smooth Japanese Maple is a species of woody plant native to Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia. Many different cultivars of this maple have been selected and they are grown worldwide for their attractive leaf shapes and colors.

Maples make fascinating bonsai due to their leaf colour changes and interesting natural tree like structures. Japanese Maple Bonsai material is available from garden centres, cuttings or seeds.

Japanese Maples respond well to Bonsai technics and are displayed in almost all styles.

Japanese Maples likes to be in a sunny or a partial shade position. In the height of summer move the Bonsai to a shaded area to prevent the leaves from drying. Try to protect the Bonsai from strong drying winds. especially during spring. Protect the trees from harsh frosts and extreme cold weather.

Keep the Bonsai well watered throughout the growing season and a moist soil at all other times.

Repotting should be done yearly for young Maples. Old specimens should only be repotted every three or four years. Use a natural to acidic well draining compost mix.

Feed every two weeks with a general soluble plant feed.

Natural pruning producers a better natural looking Bonsai but carful wiring gives good results.
